Mercedes Schlapp has no easy task in her position her position as White House adviser for strategic communications. The White House's advisor to strategic communications, Mercedes Schlapp, has faced a myriad of issues. These include a President who also has his own director of communication as well as numerous legal issues which could affect the communication strategy. Schlapp has kept her focus through the entire process, collaborating closely White House policy and political teams, along with the shop owners and the legislative affairs department. In the beginning, she has concentrated on school safety problems, addiction, infrastructure and international trade. Her interactions with journalists aren't at all in her current job. The month of March was when she was the subject of a lot of media attention after her name came up as a possible contender in the race to replace Hope Hicks in the role as communications director. Mercedes Schlapp isn't in a ideal position to be a White House strategist communications advisor. Her job is made difficult because she works alongside a president of the White House who is also his director of communications. There are also multiple legal proceedings that could disrupt the strategy of an administration's communication as well as Cabinet secretaries who are embroiled in personal disputes. Schlapp is, however, not lost sight of her mission. She is in close contact in conjunction with White House political affairs and the legislative team along with policy shops as well as the larger communications operation in order to oversee the rollout of policies. The focus of her work has been on areas such as security at schools, opioids, infrastructure, along with trade. Her current work doesn't have much contact with reporters. There was a great deal of media attention when she was identified as a candidate to replace Hope Hicks, the communications director. The battle has been bitter. Allies to Schlapp and Tony Sayegh, one of the other candidates for the post have been fighting over the media. After the Washington Examiner published a negative story about Sayegh, Schlapp claimed she phoned him to have a heart to heart.
